Le Quest de Mod X arrivee a Poitiers and Free MP3 Downloads

We've just missed the latest multi-cultural arts festival at Poitiers. Held at various venues throughout the city there were films, exhibitions, DJs and various groups playing live.

As previously mentioned on Fly, Mod X was planning collaboration with VJ Nuerotika. So it was good news that this has now come to fruition. On the Thursday night, they did a live gig at the very cool, Le Confort Moderne. Don't worry if you missed it. Due to the wonders of the Internet, the next best thing is a free audio MP3 download of the mixes.

But first, the festival was called Mix'o_matos. This sounds a bit daft, even in French. It literally means Myxomatosis! That's right, the rabbit virus. But in this context it refers to 'mixing of' the "matos" whether the "matos" are machines, computers, materials or anything that you can use to mix music.

The festival is based on promoting music and video/film. During the first two days, five teams of musicians had to create music on a specific theme. During the two following days, the video teams had to create the video for the music that was made the two days before. You get the idea.

The MOD X/Neurotika show was a 'one off'. First up was the MOD X mix, see the tracklisting below. All the tracks are from the forthcoming album except for 'Invocations' (which is from his last album, Demons and Saints). The site that's hosting the MP3 mixes, Queep (Organic) Music, say it "really covers the spectrum of MOD X's material very well" and "shows off his penchant for taking elements of house, Latino, Afro, hip hop, reggae together and fusing it all with some really cool broken beats. It is laid back at times, and upfront at others". It's impressive stuff and I'm really looking forward to the full album release.

As the response was really good, they went on with the first half of his 'Transfer Mix' as an 'encore'. This is a much darker mood at times and very much in keeping with a movie/video soundtrack theme. Queep say, "It has soul, jazz, d'n'b, Afro and Latino vibes with the main feel coming from the world music genre... some of the tracks border on the experimental". You can't resist that? Get downloading. Nice to see he ends with the big Afro Art tune of 2003, 'Green Gold' by Spiritual South.

Clearly, the whole event was an ideal concept for MOD X and Neurotika and we are pleased to hear that all went well. There's a possibility of some live footage being available from the show. What would be better is if we could get it together in the UK but in the meantime, we'll have to play 'The Quest' video again; it's still on the Ice & Spice web site. See below for details.

Many thanks to Dorothée at Ice & Spice for information and translation duties.

COMMENTS

Latest news from MOD X is that he played at to a packed house at Le Divan Du Monde in Paris for 3 hours last week (http://www.divandumonde.com). This week ‘The Quest’ is Single of the Week at www.tunes.co.uk so as the word spreads, get there early for the next one. On 28th May, he is in Paris again appearing at a completely renovated 1950s cinema called L’Etage (www.letage.fr). Tony Allen played their last month so it’s important gig for MOD X.
