Omar Sosa Tour UK

Omar Sosa couples the fearsome virtuosity of the great Cuban piano heritage with a revitalising, fresh take. Performing with two of the world's most exciting young players Dhafer Youssef and Anga Diaz, this trio presents the vibrant sound of a new world jazz sound.

Omar Sosa is one of the most charismatic and exhilarating performers of his generation. Born in Camagüey, Cuba, Sosa has travelled extensively through the Americas and Europe, seeking new sources of inspiration for his avid musical portfolio.

Growing up surrounded by some of Cuba's most creative musicians such as Chucho Valdes and Irakere, Sosa was also deeply influenced by the sounds of the great American jazz tradition through the music of Coltrane, Hancock and Corea. On graduating from the Conservatory in Havana, Sosa discovered the music of Thelonious Monk, an artist who has had a profound influence on his compositions and playing.

Sosa has taken these powerful musicians and formed his own distinctive musical style. Two Grammy nominations and a BBC World Music Award nomination have paid tribute to his ability to embrace music from so many countries yet effortlessly fuse these influences to create an exciting new sound.

This trio with two distinguished band leaders in their own rights, is guaranteed to create fireworks. Dhafer Youssef brings the spirituality of Sufi into a contemporary surrounding and following a hugely successful UK tour in November 2004, has become one of the most high profile jazz artists of his generation. Miguel 'Angá' Diaz is one of Cuba's hottest percussionists, working with the likes of Ruben Gonzales, Irakere, Orishas, John Patitucci, and David Sanchez. He is now set to release his own album on World Circuit.

COMMENTS

The Exeter Phoenix is a lovely venue - I’ll try and come along to your gig there.

I’m playing at the Phoenix on Thursday, 9th June. It looks like a good evening, with three other acoustic acts from the South West. Can’t wait!
