Bossa Futura - Guanabara, London, 3 October '06

Gerry Hectic previews the new regular night of out-there Latin and Brazilian sounds at Guanabara and casts his eye over the latest Sol Y Luna release

I was blown away by Max Cole and Planet Rescue at Guanabara a few months ago, and this promises to be equally good. Not only that, it’s FREE and it marks the first night of a regular Tuesday night of jazz and Brazilian beats with DJs Beatnik, Lewis, Spencer Lowe and Max Cole with guest Richard E (Further Out).

Still coming to terms with ‘Sol Y Luna’ there’s news of a remix 12” in addition to some amazing tracks on the album provisionally entitled Psychotropicalia (release due Spring 07). Just to get us warmed up, ‘Sol Y Luna’ gets four reworks from four different parts of Europe.

Starting close to home, Woodland Record’s Perry Hemus (Woodland Records being the home of Bryan Corbett) does something quite brilliant here. So much so, this is the current record of the week. Taking those space beams off to Saturn as he ups the percussion, guitar solo and the vocals putting Annie Whitehead’s trombone in a space shuttle!

You might recall me mentioning Rachael Calladine had a track included on Rainer Trüby’s Glücklich V compilation. Well, by coincidence, Strasbourg’s Nu Tropic (Jazzamar and DJ Link) also had a track on that LP. Unlike Rachael, Nu Tropic are the dancefloor experts in samba twisted jazz and funk. They’ve taken a housey approach but it’s not that far from the original. As a 4×4 shuffle, it’s good to hear jazz in the house again. Watch out for inclusion in those French superstar DJ charts.

There’s no question of The Sidewinder from Scotland’s knowledge of the samba on his travels to Brazil and he produces another stunning version here.

And talking of the outta reaches (depending on your starting point); the much-admired DJ Chile seems to have got it somewhere in-between the other three. Not sure where exactly, but it’s a bit of a jazz’n’breaks instrumental.

Whether on vinyl, remixed or live, we’re sure Bossa Futura are the future and it’s going to be a good night next week. Very recommended.
