Rodrigo y Gabriella - Live Manchester 15th March '06 |

Their unique heavy rock-infused folk stylings have earned them a wide following, especially since their 2004 release, ‘Live Manchester and Dublin’, which gained them a Top 10 spot in Ireland. Returning, then, to the place of a highly acclaimed recording, the acoustic guitar-slinging duo have a reputation to uphold. Dropping in seamless hints of pop, rock, metal, jazz and even a hint of an Eminem melody, Rodrigo y Gabriella are nothing less than eclectic musicians, and from the off they prove this assiduously. Gabriella’s solid rhythm techniques are more than astounding live — she forces her acoustic guitar into such percussive tapping and thudding the audience cannot fail to wonder how her fingers and hands cope. Meanwhile, Rodrigo flies through his solos, his hands ever-busy on the frets, with great assurance and mind-boggling speed. The new material from the album goes down as well with the enthusiastic crowd as familiar tunes, their intricately building and then all out rocking version of Led Zep’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ pleasing as much as their signature ‘One/Take Five’. Both performers are evidently comfortable and hugely passionate about their music on stage, playing off each other in a musical showdown that has them firing solos at each other with escalating one-upmanship. Their between-song banter — led always by Gabriella — shows that they are now well-travelled if not slightly bemused to find themselves resident in their new resident Irish setting. They get the crowd involved in a sing-along to Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, and come back, urged on, to give a generous encore. New songs, such as album opening track ‘Tamacum’, resonate after the performance, delivered with musical wit and powerful rhythmic and technical force. If you didn’t catch them this time around, they’ll be back for more UK dates in May. Book tickets while you still can. |
