Sound:Space Symposium - Bracknell, 20 January '07

A day of artist talks, demonstrations and performances exploring the power of sound in the environment and its changing role in the digital domain

Loretto Heywood

Wow! That’s a tall order but you don’t get many chances to “absorb a wealth of the latest developments in audio research and the field of sound art.”

This event features some real experts including Janek Schaefer “Vacant Space”, Ed Baxter (Resonance FM) “Radio and Locale”, Prof. Aaron Watson “Acoustic research of Megalithic monuments” with a discussion panel including representative of Sonic Arts Network, UK Podcasters Association, Mike Barnett (Beyond /Earthwind Recs), Neil C. Smith (artist) Open Source Audio Software Lab Sound:Space Screen (Cinema). There will be video documentation of spacial sound installations, audio and architecture projects, environmental sound interventions during the whole day in the Cinema.

For those a little less cerebral, in the evening there’s “a night of unleashed electronica featuring radical turntablism, live sampling, radio cut ups, beats & bass”. We know Kode9 & The Space Ape from Dubstep Allstars, Warrior Dubz and Sound Senstation but we should be shouting a little louder about what a big year it’s been for the Nanny Tango label who will be on DJ duties in the evening.

The last time I saw a copy of Nanny Tango’s top seller, ‘Cockney Bop’ by Trouble & Strife, it was at Inbeat Record Store on the boulevard Saint-Laurent. Yep, this one went worldwide proving particularly popular in Japan. Since then it’s cropped up on in various versions on Bravo’s ‘My God I’m My Dad’! More impressively, they’ve gone on to release the broken-jazz-folk-soul of Loretta Heywood’s ‘Little Angel’ which featured prominently in a number to charts in the summer like David Borsu, Perry Hemus and Max Reinhardt to name just three.

If this is the future of Nanny Tango, there’ll be much more coverage here on Fly and quite a contrast to Neil C. Smith and Janek Schaefer who would definitely feel at home at Unsafe.

It might be an unlikely place to start the musical revolution for 2007, but see the links below on how to get to Bracknell.
