Soweto Gospel Choir - Second Album and UK Tour

Gospel is the biggest-selling music genre throughout Africa and it has had its home in South Africa for a long time. The Soweto Gospel Choir were formed out of this tradition and the group has made a special place for itself in the world’s heart since South Africa told its painful story

The 26-member choir are masters at what they do — their big, rousing sound casts a warm golden glow, even if you’re not a Christian.

In its short career, the Choir has had sell-out UK tours in 2003 and 2004, they won Best Gospel Choir Awards at the 2003 and 2004 American Gospel Music Awards, were nominated for a South African Music Award in 2003, have sung at Nelson Mandela’s 80th birthday celebrations and were invited as guest artists for an event organised for the Unite Against Hunger and the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund in 2005. Central to their work is raising money for AIDS charities in South Africa, to date raising over R1.5 million (almost £150,000)

The Choir are returning to the UK from April to June 2006, touring all over the country with their new show Blessed! which shares its name with their second album recorded in 2004. The album was recorded to include a celebration of South Africa’s 10th Anniversary of democracy and features a stunning version of Peter Gabriel’s Biko as a nod to the country’s past, and Nkosi Sikekel’s ‘Afrika’, South Africa’s national anthem. But there are also tracks that merely showcase the choir’s vocal mastery such as ‘Shewane’, the poignant ‘Noyana’ and the foot-stamping ‘Masigiye’bo’.

As long as you keep images of the Lion King out of your head you’ll love it: safe, simple but accomplished.

I have been given a task to try and inspire my peers to sing and praise in assembly. I have been inspired by gospel singers and would love for a group to come to my school to show what praise is all about.
