Time Out Presents The Other Side of London (Damian Lazarus)

Listing magazine par excellence, Time Out is part of a new series of CD/DVD’s covering New York, Paris and London called ‘The Other Side of’.

So soon after the Get Lost compilation it seems everyone is catching on to the fact that Damian Lazarus (co-founder of City Rockers and Crosstown Rebel Records) is one of the best DJ’s in town.

On the CD side of things, he’s dropped a few classics in the mix (like TY’s ‘Do You Want More’) to the more obscure, (see the Magic Numbers ‘This Love’) and the ‘popular’ (Yazoo ‘In My Room’). Just goes to show how adaptable he is he’s mixed up the genres with his ‘comfort zone’ of electronic house. Clearly the producers of ‘London’ know that the Lazarus name is good enough to sell the CD by itself.

The idea of the interactive DVD is to provide a visual ‘Time Out’ for tourists. It feels like those early multimedia CDs you used to get ten years ago, especially with it’s D’n’B soundtrack. They managed to spell Killa Kella’s name wrong as he guides us to Kew Gardens. That seems an odd choice but on the whole there are some good tips for any visitor to the capital and on how to separate them from their cash.

In West London, they recommend Rough Trade records and Notting Hill Arts Club which are sound choices. And on a Saturday night in East London, try Walthamstow Greyhounds? As I used to work in the Ladbrokes on Walthamstow High Street, I’d recommend a Saturday night at The ‘Stow. Strangely they then visit Manze’s shop in Bermondsey for some jellied eels when they could have saved the tube fare and stayed in Walthamstow for pie, licker and mash in the High St. And the High St. is the longest Street Market in Europe (ed. that’s enough plugs for the Walthamstow Tourist Board).

The also take a trip on the canal from Little Venice to “the happening” Camden Market. Not sure Camden Market is as happening as it used to be (e.g. Gilles Peterson at Dingwalls etc) but there’s a new bar opened in the Lock by Alex Proud so that might be worth checking out, tourist or non-tourist.

One of the ideas of the series is these ‘new additions’ will be added to web site (see Links below) to keep the information up to date.

The Paris version is imminent whilst the New York version is already out and features Fischerspooner on the CD mix side of things. So with New York, Paris, London covered, perhaps Walthamstow should have had a edition all to itself (ed. really, that’s enough).
