Thrill Jockey Records are proud to announce that Extra Golden will be coming over to do some very special shows in July. Have you heard the band? Let me know if you are keen to hear some music and I can send you a download link for their most recent album ‘Hera ma Nono’.
Extra Golden is a international collaboration between Alex Minoff (Weird War) and Ian Eagelson (Golden) from the US and Opiyo Bilongo & Onyango Omari Wuod Omari from Kenya. They have released two albums on Thrill Jockey - ‘Ok- Oyot System’ and ‘Hera Ma Nono’.
Their sound is a unique mix of American boogie rock and Benga - an upbeat style of guitar dance music that has been popular in Kenya since the 1960’s. Opiyo Bilongo is a star in the Kenya Benga scene, having released countless recordings.
They are a fantastic live band with an amazing story to tell, what with a death in the band early on, two of the members living with the political turmoil in Kenya, and a helping hand from Barack Obama, who was pivotal in the Kenyan members of the band getting their work visas for their US tour last year (His father is also Kenyan and speaks the Luo language that the band speak in).
They have never been to the UK before and with the difficulty they have arranging work permits and visas, they probably won’t be back for a while, so the dates that they have coming up would be a really great opportunity to catch them.

9th July - The Cube - Bristol
10th July - Dingwalls - London
Whilst they are over they are also performing on the BBC Culture Show, which is to be broadcasted on 8th July at 10pm (30 min show), with an extended repeat on 11th July at 11.30pm (both songs - 45 min show).
