Patriarcas de la Rumba + LaXula - Sadler's Wells, 30 April '07

Patriarcas de la Rumba — a group of old-time Catalan Gypsies are predicted to tear up the sedate surroundings of Islington’s Sadler’s Wells.

Patriarcas de la Rumba

Patriarch is the name that because of his age and his wisdom defines a person who exercises moral authority in a family or a collective, something that is very important in the gypsy culture.

Inspired by the “Buena Vista Social Club” Patriarcas de la Rumba is the artistic name for a group of Catalan gypsies all aged between 60 and 75 years of age trying to reclaim the Catalan Rumba. Patriarcas are always accompanied by the young men of “Sabor de Gracia”: Sicus, Miki, Rafaelito and Yumitus on guitars, percussion, bass and backing vocals. Plus 2 elderly gypsy women: “La Tia Chineta” and “La Tia Pepita”, who dance the original rumba in the time-honoured Catalan Gypsy style.

Support from LaXula who mix flamenco, Arabic, klezmer, latin influences and rocky, psychedelic guitars.

Tickets £32 — £15
