Florian Meindl - Tears of a Dreamer

The last time we met Florian, we were contemplating what a hectic year he’d had. We’ve had to grab him again as he’s almost exploded with activity since January

KLING

Perhaps it was the move away from the party atmosphere of Berlin that’s helped, but the latest release has been heralded as a superior piece of work by no lesser experts than former Afro Art boss, Ashley Beedle (“absolutely love ‘Dreamer’, cannot wait to play this out”) and Laurent Garnier (“Will definitely play ‘Tears’ everywhere”).

“Well, now I’ve made an impression, releasing lots of records is the only way to get more famous and I need that in order to make a living out of music”

But before we get to that, he told Fly in our last interview that the plan was to release “one to two records a month.” So take a big breath as he guides us through what he’s been up to since the ‘Reality Is On The Way’ on Flash Recordings (a label he runs with Oliver Koletzki).

“Well, now I’ve made an impression, releasing lots of records is the only way to get more famous and I need that in order to make a living out of music,” he explains. “As my tracks are in the charts of people like Hernan Cataneo, Laurent Garnier, Marc Romboy, Stephan Bodzin, Tiga and a hell of a lot of other DJs who I’ve admired my whole life, not to mention the hundreds of their records I’ve bought and played. So now, I’m able to be more relaxed and the plan for the future is to release just the best of the best on selected labels, the rest will be released secretly under my other names, there are already a few but I will not tell them to anybody; he, he..”

And those records that have helped raise his profile were, the Treapez follow up to ‘Milk In Tea’. Released in January, ‘Chase The Robot’ — reminiscent of early Plastikman and the manic ‘Worms’ on the other side. “To be honest, I absolutely did not think about Plastikman when I was making this track even though I’m a real fan. It is very funny for me how people interpret my productions, sometimes they say exactly what I thought when I produced it, but sometimes they say something totally different which is very interesting for me, because to release records initiates some other reactions and interpretations that’s great. I really like the old school from Detroit, I own almost every axis and a lot of planet e and other Detroit stuff and I like it and it has influenced me so it will be in my productions for ever maybe, but I don’t think that you can hear that obviously in my tracks, well, I can’t hear it.”

Hectic has been a fan of ‘Worms’ for some time now, “this is one of my most successful productions I have done which was very surprising for me, because it was planned as the experimental and adventurous b-side. I suppose sometimes you get the reward for such risky things, the reaction in the club is always amazing, it is a hit! The arrangement drives them bonkers! Each time, eeeverywhere….. that’s just a fact, I play out twice a week.”

February saw ‘Kolibri’ released on Flash Recordings with Oliver Koletzki and it’s a different side of Florian when they get together. He tells me that, “I just kind of do what I like. I have two faces as a producer as well as a DJ. One is the more electro techno style which is represented on Flash and Kling Klong and the more minimal which is on Trapez”.

My German isn’t that good but when the b-side is described as “der humorvolle Titel ist ein Dancefloor-Killer mit einem zappeligen Loop, typischen Rave-synthies and einem morderhaft deepen subbass”, I think even I can guess ‘Grandmothers Flash’ is something a bit special. “I play it a lot and it’s just a techno weapon at the end of the day….. when they want to get punched in the prime time you know?”

Yeah I know the type of thing and but there’s another label that Florian had a 12” out on in February. ‘Moonchild’ was released on Resopal Schallware which I thought was very Germanic but he says, “Yeah, ‘Moonchild’ is a very nice deep kind of thing which I would associate with my detroit influences to be honest! So good, the Resopal crew did their own remix which is also addictive to those that like a bit of ping-pong (a la Daisy Daisy).

This 12” also had a track called ‘Brick Lane’ which is the first sign that Florian is living in London. “I often go out and meet friends in Brick Lane. It’s famous for the East London thing so I thought I’d make a tribute to that”. Not only that, “Marc Romboy put it on number one in his charts and it’s soon going on a very important compilation!”

You told us last time about the Meindl & Dao recording (Decades EP on Session Deluxe) and you’ve teamed up again with Martin Eyerer for your most recent two track 12” ‘Dreamer’/’Tears’. Both tracks are getting big reactions. “Yeah, I just can tell you that ‘Dreamer’ and ‘Tears’ are masterpieces in my opinion, it reflects exactly everything that I wanted to, it’s the result of a lot of my influences and a sound design showcase with murderous basses which remind me on my d’n’b times.”

Fans will recognise Florian’s skills in making stand out tunes and he is rightly proud of this EP (and he also did the drawings on the cover — as above).

The only tears this dreamer is shedding is for the debut album which is coming he tells me, In the meantime you can now expect a maximum one record every two months after the Klingklong release. After that, “I also will go more international and try to release on labels from other countries.”
