London Jazz Fringe Festival - BeatTree

Having spent the best part of his twenties playing in bands all over the capital, drummer Brian Hedemann fuses his experience in hip hop, jazz, drum n'bass and garage to finally realise his own musical vision.

Beat Tree in a tree

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

With a touch of psychedelia thrown in for good measure, Beat Tree was formed in 2004 and features top players from the East London jazz scene and a host of samples and loops triggered in and amongst the poly-rhythms of Brian Hedemann.

What kinds of sounds and musical influences are you going to be experimenting with at the Alternative London Jazz Festival?
Live hypnotic drumbeats, samples vocals and cello melodiesÖInfluenced by jazz improv fused with RnB, DnB and ambient

How did you get involved with the festival?
We've been invited by Ed Simpson.

If anyone is unfamiliar with your work, can you give them a bluffer's description and some musical career highlights hype?
Well! BeatTree comprises of fellow musicians who joined forces to form an outfit of complete uncompromised pure music. The project is hype, but relatively fresh so hasn't got much of a profile yet.

We play a wide selection of tunes mixed with some improvised bits where we juggle with unusual grooves, everything hype of course, very hype.

However, we've all been gigging in many different countries and with many different signed and unsigned bands for over 10 years.

So we find NOW is the time to go for it, giving the big chemistry that we have when we play together.

Name one essential non-jazz record that everyone should listen to and tell us why it is so special.
Tough one! Ok I will say listen to Ani Difranco. Any record.

If Bono is ill and needs someone to stand in for him the next time he is asked to address the world's leaders, what would you tell them?
We would say to the world's leaders:
Democracy and freedom are words very commonly used these days. Democracy is the free and equal right of every person to participate in a system of government, often practiced by electing representatives of the people by the people.

We, the people of this nation, are aware that not only we are not being represented, but also the world leaders are taking advantage of their power to favour only a small elite group of rich and powerful people, disregarding human rights, the environment and more importantly, our say.

We do not agree with WAR. Especially one that is for the enrichment of the USA and its allies.

We are outraged by the fact that people are still dying of hunger while Bush and Kerry are spending over 400 million dollars in their 2004 election campaigns.

Are there not enough resources for everyone in this world?
Or is it that some people are taking more than they should?

This society and ìdemocratic systemî is going to remain the same until we, the people, do something about it.
