Daniel Haaksman - Baile Funk Mule

Daniel Haaksman had the look of a man who’d had an early start to the day but as soon as he started talking about baile funk, he lit up as bright as the proverbial Christmas tree

Edu K

Daniel was in Camden Town with Edu K to appear at the Rio Rox for another great session of Brazilian bizniz.

Daniel is a well-known DJ and remixer being one half of Haaksman & Haaksman (the other Haaksman being his brother Felix, aka Dutch Rhythm Combo). In addition to Haaksman & Haaksman putting their talents to a remix of the summer hit by The Cuban Brothers, ‘A Million Stories’, Daniel has close links with the Austrian scene (remixing Rodney Hunter, Tosca and many more) and appearing at the Dub Club with friends of Fly Makossa and Megablast and his old friend, Dubmaster Glyn ‘Bigga’ Bush.

He’s also the boss of Man Recordings and they are currently at the cutting edge of bringing Europe the best of the new wave of baile funk. He told me, “I have such a wide range of musical interests, funk, house, downtempo, old skool hip hop but there’s so few good funk tracks, sonically, baile funk reminds me of funk and hip hop.”

Man Recordings released one of the biggest tracks this year, Edu K’s ‘Hot Mama’ — which is like a funked up Tito Puente and it’s Daniel’s contacts that have provided some particularly good remixes. Dub clubbers will know the speaker blowing bounce of the Zuzuku Mash up but there’s Rio Rox resident, Graeme Sinden’s house mix, a Bonde Do Role mix and a very European sounding Jamekian mix.

Daniel and Edu K will be at Dub Club re-launch on Monday and the next couple Rio Rox should be just as good with a the Christmas Carnival party with Benji B at the end of the month (see links below).

If you’re on your way to Berlin for the party season, Daniel recommends Club 103 for the monthly Baile Funk Session and Ghetto Blaster (formerly Cookies). And if you’re after vinyl, the shops to find are Dig A Little Deeper for jazz, dnb, Brazilian, disco, funk and Melting Point for your latest house and techno.

One thing is for sure, wherever Daniel and Edu K are, the music is hot enough to get ya mama to shake her hips and there’s a Funk Mundial series coming out in the new year. Man, baile funk is now officially hot!
