Natural Self - 'The Love Theme' EP

There was only one place to be this week and I didn’t make it. But there’s no time to lament that, as ‘The Love Theme’ EP is here to raise our spirits

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

“Oh torment me not Mr. Hectic, where are you referring to?”, I hear you moan. It was The Quay Club on Wednesday where you’d find those kings of all things hip hop, funk, Latin, soul and jazz and on this latest EP, the two friends team up once again.

You’ll recall the title track, ‘The Love Theme’ rounded off the brilliant debut album Let Peace Be The Ruler and it finds Nat in a modal mood of cinematic proportions.

Ideal then for Ben Lamdin (aka Nostalgia 77 and Impossible Ark Records to get remixing and to take advantage of Riaan Vosloo, Mark Hanslip and Graham Fox from the Nostalgia 77 Octet, as it’s a re-recording and remix in one.

We’ve kept a close eye on these Self and 77 from their Broken Keys project to Ben’s dealings with Graham Collier and they just don’t disappoint.

Talking of which, King of the tubby mixing desk, Prince Fatty (he of ‘Milk And Honey’ and Survival Of The Fattest) let’s go on a suitably subtle dub mix from the church of jazz. This is like acoustic psychedelic ambient jazz on an Out Of Phase tip (see The Oscillation).

‘The Lament’, is an exclusive unreleased track that has elements of the brilliant ‘Solomon’ with added gypsy violin by Mikey Simmonds. Balkan beats from the east with choir like voices make this the most unlikely remix material for Kid Kanevil.

One of he hottest remixers at the moment, Kid Kanevil who is in Stateless (they of so much ‘comment’ about with last years’ DJ Shadow album and gigs) has brushed aside the knockers (oh err!) and got on with his own take on the future of instrumental hip hop. Not that this is particularly hip hop but when you’ve been on tour with DJ Shadow, who knows we’ll your influences will end up?

We last saw Natural Self on the remix of Abdominal’s ‘Workout’) and the compilation Dirtybeatbreakinfunkandhiphop and this EP just sees even further progress.

The four tracks are really hypnotic and brilliant stuff. I love them all.
