Saturn Radio / Phabius @ Amber, London (Live Review)

The opening night for the Saturn Radio Sound System crew was a bit of a busy one as the heads came out to support

Saturn Radio Amber

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Nick Luscombe (XFM Flo-Motion, Sunday 10pm) was there very early to find out what was going on this new monthly Wednesday nighter in Soho at the Amber Bar in Poland St. W1. Also spotted was half of the Milk Audio’s Forward/Backward Show, Nigel Prankster (3Hedz/Big Chill), Deborah Jordan and the ever youthful Beverly O.

All had come to hear the cosmic sounds of DJs Richard E (Further Out Recordings), Simon S (Futuristica Music) and ‘star’ of Bestival, Phabius with his “electrotonal hitting thing”.

You’re guaranteed cutting edge tunes from these guys such as current favourites, Part Time Heroes (new 12” and Hectic review HERE) and the truly awesome Electric Conversation. You’ll definitely be hearing more of Electric Conversation as Futuristica Music’s new signings are possible the embodiment of “the new direction in soul and jazz”. So stay tuned for that but who is this Phabius chap? Whilst he can excite a veteran like Mixmaster Morris at Bestival with a DJ set, he’s better know for his expertise on the hitting thing that’s better known as the premier exponent of the Roland Handsonic.

While specialist chat rooms will know his feelings on the Roland conga-style stands, what shouldn’t be overlooked, in the hands of a expert, is how authentic this thing is. And you never know, you may be lucky enough to experience a Phabius Phantasmagoria of Andromeda inspired “interplanetary genre-hopping trip enabling pod-travel between psychedelia, nu and space jazz, cosmic hip hop, and broken beetz: a veritable cornucopia of eclectica”. What does that sound like? To give you a clue, here’s a previous (but typical) set list:

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD ‘Hypnotized’ (Blue Note, 1998)
NOBODY ‘Shades Of Orange’ featuring 2Mex (Ubiquity, 2000)
DJ CAM ‘Innervisions’ (Columbia, 1996)
JEAN CLAUDE VANNIER ‘Danse Des Mouches Noires Gardes Du Roi’ (1972/2005 re-issue on Finders Keepers)
THE AMORPHOUS ANDROGYNOUS ‘The Emptiness Of Nothingness’ (EMI Harvest 2005)
AFRONAUGHT ‘Transcend Me’ (Apollo, 2001)
SUPER JAY ‘Super Jay’s Love Theme’ (1980/2005 Hitmakers of America re-issue)
4 HERO ‘We Who Are Not As Others’ (Jazzanova Remix) (Talkin Loud, 1999)
MANFRED HUBLER & SIEGFRID SCHWAB ‘We Don’t Care’ (1969/ 1995 Crippled Dick Hot Wax re-issue) from VAMYROS LESBOS soundtrack.

An experience not to miss, making Wednesday night the most popular night out in town as this gig is a great addition to the ‘original’ Saturn Radio at Market Place. If bifurcated bossa, smoky hip hop, downbeat future-jazz exotica, space funk and upfront label exclusives are your thing, so is this. And it’s all FREE!
