Adem - Launch Yourself (The Remixes)

Domino Records did themselves a big favour when they signed up Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) and his remix of ‘Launch Yourself’.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Kieran is not only a brilliant solo artist, he can extend himself in the jazz field (notably with Steve Reid) and he has become one of the most sought-after remix kings and compilation compiler (the recently released DJ-Kicks-Four Tet has gain much attention for its scope; Curtis Mayfield to Gong!). So with all this talent, it’s little surprise Domino got him to add the finishing touches to Adem’s second album Love And Other Planets.

Although the album came out a couple of months ago and Adem has toured since the release, I’m afraid it passed me. But I’m glad I’ve got hold of the first single, ‘Launch Yourself’ (erm..isn’t it the other way around Domino, single precedes album?).

As there seems a backlash to the folkronica ‘tag’, nu-folk is equally objectionable so, just for now, if I say this track is very much in the Tunng-family you’ll know what I mean (by the way, Tunng were brilliant at the Wychwood Festival).

On this 12” you get 3 remixes and the original version. The original is said to be a highlight of the album. It is a complication of muted manic handclaps with a gentle waterfall of chimes and maracas with the mellow vocal of Adem on top. With its space travel inspired lyrics, it’s what every folky Sun Ra fan looks out for.

We knew Hot Chip was going to be busy this year and their remix is a little surprising. Apparently, the multi-layered vocals on ‘Launch Yourself’ came from Adem working with Hot Chip on their album as he’s tried to replicate the sound of the vocoder ‘naturally’. On their remix, think Hot Chip that’s been left to cool down overnight as it plods along.

As you can imagine, it’s the Four Tet version that does it for me. Like an upbeat Anne Wirz’s ‘Guerrière’ job with chimes and bleeps and conflicting with a 4/4 beat. Sounds Hectic, Kieron’s gone Japanese Zen garden in the House with synths.

Adem will be appearing at an Eat Your Own Ears next Thursday at the Astoria and it looks a good line up with Battle (whose remix of ‘A Joy’ turned up on Get Lost this week). So good, I might even make the effort to get along to it.
