Adem - Takes

Why produce an album of covers if you’re a perfectly decent songwriter? Adem Ilhan is that rarest of talents: a musician who produces a solo album worthy of a whole band of talented musos, and he proves to be the exception with his Takes.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

And in Adem’s third album the pedegree of the covers is the standout element of Takes: from the opener of Bedhead’s ‘Bedside Table’ through to Tortoise, PJ Harvey and Yo la Tengo, all given the nu-folk treatment.

It’s a very personal album, from the choice of songs to the presentation, and there’s a sense Ilhan is wearing his heart on his sleeve with this one. Although it feels overall less like an album proper than an accomplished interlude between albums, it’s an engrossing trip back through the past decade or so through the eyes of a visionary, who deserves all the plaudits he gets.

If there’s a criticism to be made it’s that it’s a fairly self-indulgent thing to record an album of formative songs, but if you can pull it off like this then hell, we should all do it. Except, we probably couldn’t…

Takes is released on Domino.
