Amy Winehouse: Frank Deluxe |

|
Now, fans have dropped, her off-putting performances, her overgrown hair, bad doings, drugs, alcoholism, bad public behavior, it’s overshadowing her musical career. She is kind of reliving a teenage fantasy, going out with a rebel boyfriend, and doing rebelious things slightly for the sake of attention and more record sales. Perhaps this artist feels the need to do these things else people won’t buy into her music. Sadly, her music speaks more volumes than the troubles of Amy Winehouse in her personal life but it is very difficult to see past or hear past that when you hear songs like ‘Rehab’ or ‘You Know I’m No Good’. Possibly Back To Black was far too honest and far too depressing, it is very outlandish for a major label like Island Records to agree to release such expressive music from a broken soul, at a tender age, the voice sounds mature like her idols, Aretha & Dinah but is it all really worth it? Back in 2003 Frank was released, she mixed in the sounds of Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington to Thelonius Monk and others with hip-hop and jazz beats. It was a musical revelation, and her songs lyrically were much stronger. As for her voice, it was pure, soulful, and she could hold a melody. Nowadays Amy Winehouse can’t even sing one lyrical sentence without messing it around due to the state of mind she is in. Of course each artist needs room to grow, and Frank clearly had a lot of complicated vocals, due to the music being focused on jazz. Though, jazz seems to bring out the beauty in Amy Winehouse. This whole soul thing doesn’t seem to be doing this supremely talented artist any favours. Her up bringing wasn’t easy, but is this music making Amy’s adult life any easier? From the papers it doesn’t appear so. In 2008, after the world went crazy over Back To Black, why after all the trouble it has got her into? Frank Deluxe was released in 2008, the first disc was the original 2003 release but then the second disc was a Bonus Disc. Including superb original demos, Hootenanny Performances from Later with Jools, B-Sides, more Later with Jools Holland performances where she showcases her incredible 19 year old jazz voice singing with more soul than possibly some of the originals like ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’, and ‘Teach Me Tonight’. Then there are exclusive songs like Live At The Concorde in Brighton, Janice Long Session, and a few cool remixes. By (MJ Cole Mix) ‘Fuck Me Pumps’, (Seijis Buggin’ Mix), ‘Take The Box’, (Harmonix 33 Mix) ‘Stronger Than Me’, and (CJ Mix) ‘In My Bed’. Overall, I don’t like deluxe albums, I always appreciate the original much more. I kind of appreciate Island leaving off where she started at her best. Amy Winehouse is such an intelligent, unique, song writer, and person of our times, why should people buy into Back To Black? Frank is where she shines, jazz makes Amy happy. And quite frankly, it makes me happy to listen to her on Frank because her life was much better, and so was her music. |
