Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. It was only the other week she was at the Big Chill Festival 2010 (see review of Sunday HERE) and before that featuring on Bonobo’s album Black Sands. Then this week it’s the session on Gilles Peterson’s show (see links below for ‘Listen Again’) and tonight’s album launch at Cafe Oto - phew! And if little girl lost doesn’t know where she’s going as she’s already working with Flying Lotus, Theo Parrish, Mr Scruff or Bonobo. Last some list and a variety of musical styles. So where does Lost Where I Belong belong in the “file under” box? She says, “it’s about still feeling lost even though you know what path you should be taking in life. It’s also a song about keeping the faith despite it all!” Although this album is produced by Bonobo, it’s not Black Sands Vol. 2. The two of them recorded the 9 tracks in Simon’s studio in East London with live musicians and some studio sampling to produce the summer sound of soul 2010. If you’re not already in love with the title track, you soon will be. Whilst all the attention might have been on the FlyLo remix and similarly, the Mount Kimbie remix of another single, ‘A Town Called Obsolete’, on the album they are the core of the album. ‘Far Closer’ has Northern Soul leanings (with strings and things) whilst the opener, ‘Draw The Stars’ is in the spaceways of marimba beats and cosmic chimes (like the FlyLo remix of ‘Lost Where I Belong’ but stripped of Flying Lotus’ input - I know what I mean, I think). In fact the closing track, ‘X’ is very dreamy with fantastic lyrics sung to perfection whilst you’d expect a track called ‘Daydreamer’ to be a bit sleepy eyed but she shows off an otherwise unheard feature of a vocal range (and the 60s organ backing is a nice touch). The casual maracas on ‘Something In the Silence’ was stripped down even further for their last song at the Big Chill (with audience participation on a cover of Chaka Khan’s classic ‘Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)’ that really suited them) whilst they can equally get a bit funky with horns on ‘Up In Fire’. This is an album that’s more than “downtempo, acoustic, soul” and the seemingly effortless beauty of both production and her star performance will reap big rewards and we strongly recommend you get closer to Lost Where I Belong; it’s a All-winner already. And don’t forget, it’s Ninja Tune’s 20th Anniversary this year and this is album is such a fantastic achievement, its got to be one of their best ever?
