Antoni Maiovvi - The Thorns Of Love

Once again there’s a summer of disco ahead of us but Caravan Recordings’ glitter ball is shining on this new talent from the underground Bristol scene via Turin.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Somewhat of a diversion from the last release on Caravan by Emptyset with the album called Emptyset as Antoni Maiovvi’s The Thorns Of Love is said to be somewhere between Hi-NRG godfather Patrick Cowley, the melancholic avant-disco of Arthur Russell and the cinematic experience of John Carpenter!

Well the opener, ‘This Is The Beast’ certainly has elements of all three of the above with a touch of techno-dub circa mid 80s Bustin’ Out. It’s a bit scary as you half expect Patrick Hernandez to start singing “Born To Be Alive” at any stage towards the end and the next one, ‘The Sign From The Sky Was A Lie Without A Doubt’ is even more overtly Italo-disco boogie.

In sharp contrast, ‘Treason’ is his cinematic interlude before getting lost on a cyber-disco space trip on ‘Class Dagger’. And the last track, it could have been a Roxy Music remix circa Avalon!

For analogue synth fans from Eno to Girogio Moroder this is Malovvi’s most complete album to date and his first for Caravan; the previous two albums being on Seed Records Electro Muscle Cult and Shadow Of The Bloodstained Kiss that are mere warm ups for this love letter to a self-harming goth in Studio 54.

The album cover is a bit GCSE Artwork project but I suspect that’s on purpose to fit in with the 80s period love theme but that’s a slight moan as otherwise, I feel love, I feel love, I feel love, I feel Looooooooooveeeee - Ohh Ohhhh!.
