And perhaps that is no surprise when you hear of her upbringing as the daughter of a heroin addict, in and out of foster homes, and whose father rescued her from misery and shared with her his love of music. Ayọ is an original singer-songwriter with the voice of a soul girl and a handy way with the guitar. She can nail the blues as she does on ‘Maybe’ or she can drop in a backbeat and chase ahead on ‘Slow Slow (Run Run)’ or take the same elements and make a protest song out of them as she does on ‘What’s This All About’. But it is the song ‘Sometimes’ that has the making of a modern classic. A love song sure but one of broken dreams, glued together with hope and pain. And because life is sometimes not just fair but occasionally generous, there is a bonus acoustic version of the song tacked on to the end of the album. Beautiful. |
