Bachelors Of Science - Warehouse Dayz

Bachelors Of Science are a duo based in San Francisco and after their successful Science Fiction debut, Warehouse Dayz is well up to speed.

After musing on the past, present and present of d’n’b of late (as in Nneka, Joker, Drumsound & Bassline Smith), if you have won the “Best Drum ‘n’ Bass Track” at the 2009 Beatport Awards, I’d say, you’ve got a fair chance to know what d’n’b heaven is all about; but Bachelors Of Science can top even that!

Producer and classically trained musician Phil Rene (who hails from New Zealand but was raised in the UK) and Chris Doe (UK hardcore and jungle DJ circa ‘91-95) met in California of all places and quickly came to the conclusion that their past backgrounds were a successful blueprint for future productions. And they weren’t wrong as these guys are taking on the liquid funk of LTJ Bukem, Basement Jaxx, Makoto, Big Bud and a few (musical) holes in-between.

Drum & Bass producer from Leiden, Lenzman (aka Teije van Vliet) turned up with a remix of ‘Ice Dance’ that was doing the rounds as the pre-release sampler but there’s also the reggae/Big Bud influence is in there on ‘Red Stripe’ (did you see what they did there?) but they really do go all over the place. There’s the d’n’b ballad ‘Can’t Let Go’ (not half as bad as it might sound reading this), “Lindstrøm infected space-disco” on ‘Match Point’ (as big fans of Prins Thomas, I can sincerely say I wish I’d had said that quote as it’s perfectly true) and (with the return of the Amen Break), ‘The Rush’ ends album on a big high to say the least - orchestral d’n’b dubstep?.

Why not, I say. And the rest of the album might not exactly match these highlights but as an unreformed album consumer (and convert to ‘Bombay Sapphire’ - that sounds more commuter express than gin and tonic) this CD is far from the obvious; even Roni Size of 2010? Definitely worth checking out as it’s one of those that gets better on every listen.
