Bellows - The Troop EP

The latest signing to Cake Records march out with a debut EP, The Troop, are they ready to do battle?

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Perhaps it was due to all the excitement of the London Jazz Festival last week or seeing that lover of all things 1967 Pink Floydesque Carlos Niño (he of Build An Ark - see interview HERE and the Love (Part 1) review HERE), but the last time I was at Cargo was to see Get The Blessing and Bellows were the support band (see reveiw HERE).

They’ve since played at the Vortex with Zed-U and at Komedia’s Studio Bar for the The Troop EP launch party.

Whilst Bellows jazz-rock is no fusion, it has been said either ‘post-jazz’ or ‘post-rock’ is too simplistic. They describe their own sound as “cinematic instrumental music” and when Richard Brincklow (piano/keyboards), Marcus O’Dair (upright bass), Andrew Phillips (guitar, laptop) and Jim Whyte/Alon Cohen (drums) are joined by the strings of Annie Kerr (who’s worked with Andrew Liles) and Bela Emerson (of Strings Of Consciousness), as they are on this EP, they certainly are a lot closer to the Cinematic Orchestra. But as you can imagine with a quartet with backgrounds in rock, jazz, classical and electronica, and their influences range from Amon Tobin to Portishead and Debussy to Charles Mingus.

Bellows are by no means an easy band to pigeonhole, but their beguiling, brooding, multi-layered sounds appeal to listeners from across the board. Of course, the only way to fully appreciate the scale and scope of their music is to experience them for yourselves.

A full length album is due out next year so enjoy getting your head around the EP.
