Benga + Coki - 'Night'

In the underground world of dubstep, you wonder if night follows day as the bass bombs from the dark side are the lifeblood of the genre. On this new track, two experts have perfectly caught the vibe

TEMPA030.JPG

Beni Uthman (aka Benja) last release on Tempa was his tribute to The Godfather Of Soul, Mr James Brown but if you’re an avid listener to the Gilles Peterson show (and or message board regular), his track with mate Coki, ‘Night’ has been the one to look out for.

And what was GP going on about getting Nostalgia 77 to do a remix? We’re just wetting ourselves with anticipation of the thought of modal dubstep as long time followers of Mr. Lamdin and his various projects and collaborations (Natuaral Self, Prince Fatty, Impossible Ark, Max Grunhard and many more)

On the b-side, ‘Drumz West’ is the dark of the dub with synth choirs going on which reminds me of ‘Music Box’ (from The Warrior Dubz and neither that or the closing track, ‘Emotions’, would look out of place on a Dubstep Allstars edition.

You might have guest from the title of ‘Emotions’ that there’s something a little deeper going on that the average, a little more Detroit perhaps? But that’s how you get a reputation as one of the top guys on the scene. That little bit more effort, like the other dubstep heavyweight, Skream who both do battle on Dubstep Drama Series 2 which I think has something to do with East London’s Rinse.FM.

And good to see that dupstep is doing fine outside the boarders on Croydon and E post codes as there’s a big posse going off to Amsterdam in a few weeks for one of the biggest dance festival weekends anywhere (see links below); not really dubstep, but I think I’d be thinking about getting out ‘Too Much Skunk Tonight’).
