Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve - Re-Animations Vol. 1

Mixed reviews for this one which is not that surprising considering the lenghts that Erol Alkan and Richard Norris (aka Beyond The Wizards Sleeve) go to re-animate tracks for a Re-Animations Vol. 1.

Anyone with a Monday night musical bent that ranges from Franz Ferdinand to Midlake is going to be a bit different, if not very different.

I’ve been a long time fan of the pysh-folky-eighties cum Fleetwod Mac BTWS’ remix of Roscoe’s ‘Midlake’ (as also featured on Groove Armada’s LateNightTales and the album finishes off with a couple of well loved tracks we know well from other compilations, the Alex Dallas/Jazzanova album Secret Love 4 that featured the remix of Findlay Brown’s ‘Losing The Will To Survive’ and Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Love’ from Sample And Hold.

And another track that always gets attention is Peter Bjorn And John’s ‘Young Folks’ (possibly at it’s peak at Bestival in 2006 along with The Maccabees’ ‘X-Ray’) and BTWS’ version give young upstart Diplo’s a decent run for their percussive money (see Decent Work For Decent Pay, Vol. 1).

The Goldfrapp track is a bit different for them; which reminds me, did I ever tell you the story of my step mum and Ms. Goldfrapp’s mom? (Ed. One for another day when the lawyers ain’t reading) but the other highlights are the CSNY/Pysch of ‘Outlaw’ and ‘Come Hear The Trumpets’ that work better for me than the higher profile artists. And although you can’t hear much of Samuel Dust (he of Late Of The Pier and the Filthy Dukes’ ‘This Is Rhythm’). ‘The Bears Are Coming’ is a good a go at indie-go-go.

CD comes with 20 page booklet a hour long Alkan mix of all the tracks to download. With the sad end of The End, you can see a Volume 2 perhaps is high on the Sleeve’s collective agenda as it some new material would seem to be the next step.
