Biggabush - BiggaBush In Dub

The debut album on his own Lion Head Recordings, it could have been subtitled, lessons from the desk of the master or something equally Lee Perry/King Tubby like

Bigga Bush Big Chill

This album was launched at the Big Chill Bar and Glyn has done his usual excellent job and has put that all-important BiggaBush twist on the remix. What first strikes you about this collection of nine re-mastered gems is how laid back it is. So much so, the ‘guitar’ version of ‘Push Push’ has been transformed into a new classic of chill seashore samba. Ideal for fans of Seu Jorge (Hectic and Bigga included), he told me at the gig that due to the positive reaction to this track, there’s likely to be more Rockers Hi-Fi [re]interpretations to come.

That’s great news but that’s not the only track on the album. The opening two tracks get us in the mood for ‘Push Push’ as the dreamy echo and ambient harp set the scene. Talking of chill, ‘East Africa Dub Stylee’ is ideal for the Big Chill as it’s a big bouncey ‘bomtempi’ in a squiggly Kasbah. This track was co-produced with Ventoux (who we’re going to be featuring shortly) and it’s in a similar territory to ‘Roots Of Orient’, which features the melodica.

If Bigga has a territory, ‘Dub Interlock’ is probably where the capital is located; he’s at his best with a big bass synth and dub echo chamber before getting bouncy. The king of Dorset’s Brentford Road gets proper reggae on (the almost self-entitled) ‘Don In Studio One’.

Arguably, he saves the best till last with ‘Intravenous 2’ but this guy can’t do wrong for me when he’s in this mood.

Hectic Mix nomination: ‘Push Push’, East Africa Dub Stylee’, ‘Roots Of Orient’, ‘Intravenous 2’
