Bomb The Bass - Future Chaos

Bomb the Bass (aka Tim Simenon) is back but not back in the 80s original retro, back in today’s future with loads of guest pals on vocals.

For all the different collaborations, Future Chaos is the most cohesive Bomb The Bass album yet and with one of the best tracks of the moment in ‘Butterfingers’ and its smiley, happy video here with my favourit line this year, “I play tetris in my eyelids”.

With vocals from ‘hot as hell’ Fujiya & Miyagi’s David Best ‘Butterfingers’ sets a high standard for the rest of the “synth-rich” album. But Future Chaos isn’t a one-track album as ‘Burn The Bunker’ (featuring Toob) crosses ‘Warm Leatherette’ with a ‘Trans Europe Express’ in a mad race. And Jon Spencer (he of Blues Explosion and big mate of DJ Shadow) turns up on ‘Fuzzbox’ that sounds particularly Alec Empire/scary loud whilst Mark Lanegan (best known for his work with Isobel Campbell) is distinctively post-gothic on ‘Black River’.

The rest on the album features Paul Conboy who is said to sound like a mellow Thom Yorke (yep, I can here that, particularly on ‘Smog’) and apparently these tracks are just him (Conboy) and Simenon on minimoog. It just goes to show how advanced the early anolog gear was and that for all our advancements, have we progressed? Now we have future chaos, the chaos of earlier simpler days still has something we can learn from/enjoy. Note: get this album on a good hi-fi as it didn’t work for me/was indended for ipod earphones.

Its been 21 years since Bomb The Bass’ ‘Beat Dis’ hit the charts at No. 2, a track that started Simenon’s production and remix career that has touched the likes of Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Massive Attack, Jah Wobble, Sinead O’Connor to name just a mere handful. It’s good to have him back and he’s performing at Proud in Camden on 7th November on the Mucha Marcha night (see links below) with “much more to be confirmed”. Sounds like an excellent gig and get the album before you go.
