Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Boohgaloo Zoo are the bad boy duo of K’bonus and U-Gene, Two like minded souls from the Belgium and Dutch underground scenes that put the cork of funk back in the booty. Those with good memories may recall K’bonus from the It Becomes Infectious compilation whilst U-Gene is a keyboardist and vocalist featured on various funk, soul and hip-hop releases as well as being part of the live band of Kraak & Smaak. The pair met at the ‘10 Days Off’ festival in Ghent the duo started exchanging music and before you knew it, here’s a full album’s worth of Boohgaloo Zoo out on Lovemonk Records. Now forget the laid back jazzy chill of the intro as these boys are nothing like chill. Get prepared for some modern style Ohio Players hip-hop ‘cos these guys have found it big time. Not only that, the hip-hop rap element is provided by the The Unclosed Mind of Replife and it’s brilliant to hear him again on the tracks ‘No Joke’, ‘Watch It’, ‘Found It’ and ‘Tonight’. On the fantastic synth-out dirty funk of ‘Found It’, he says, “Let’s take a minute to let the track breath”. We love that but he just gets better, “playing Deodato like I struck the Lotto” and in the course of the story “for rhyming purposes, lets call her Jilly” as it follows filly; believe me, he’s a star! ‘Testify’ is funky superstitious Prince meets Amp Fiddler in low lands gospel - funk on baby - and ‘I Got’ goes a bit Jakko “Oh!” with cello groove and nu-jazz keys; the bongo finish will get it in every time for me. Replife returns on ‘Watch It’ that’s got a sing-a-long hook of “Ain’t gonna settle for less” with a synth heavy Sa-Ra beat groove along with ‘No Joke’ that features some heavy horn funk with some old skool scratchin’ by Belgian DJ Grazzhopper. The same goes for the other tracks as I’ve not stopped playing it all from start to finish for days now. ‘Watch It’ in particular sees all three of them contribute as a group and as Replife says on ‘Found It’, “I don’t think they know what they heard y’all , I think they might need to rewind”. Funk is at the core of this project as they know how to cross Funkadelica with Outkast (try and stay still to ‘I Got’) but these guys are more than multi-influenced cool dudes, they are dancing in a Boohgaloo Zoo after all. I need to testify! Links: |
