Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. With a back catalogue of releases on influential West Coast labels Stones Throw and Ubiquity and a reputation for storming live gigs, the band that’s led by The Kid Named Miles (aka Miles Tackett) has spent the last two years working on this album as a tribute to partner at the Root Down club, DJ Dusk. Dusk passed away after a road accident a few years ago but appears alongside Chali 2na (as in Jurassic 5 and all round hip-hop adventurer guesting with Galactic, Perecee P and DJ Babu to mention just a few) on the track ‘Posed To Be. And whilst on the subject, these is a album with few guest but the soul diva called Afrodyete (how clever) make a big impression on a track called ‘Come On Over’. Other standout tracks are the opener, the Mizzell flultesque ‘Dark Clouds Rain Soul’, ‘Me & Michelle’ and ‘I Don’t Wanna Wait’ (with a great cello break from Miles who also performs bass, drums, guitars, keys, percussion and vocals on the record). These guys have gigged their way around the world and if aren’t sure what your own “Breakestra” band are called, they name check nearly all of them on the track ‘No Matter Where You Go” including The Bamboos, The New Mastersounds, Alice Russell, Osaka Manaurail, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and many more. Inevitably there’s a big undercurrent of JB running all through the CD but on the instrumental front, ‘You’ll Never Know’ is a cool downtempo string backed funker with a heavy piano lead and the closer ‘Set The Sun’ shows off how soulfully they can rock. After hearing this new album quite a few times now, it is indeed a wonderful tribute to DJ Dusk and Breakestra are back better than ever as the quality just keeps on rising to the top! These guys truly make a joyful noise to dance to and it looks like they are touring in Europe in October and November so make sure you try and catch ‘em.
