Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. For more on Carlos Niño visiting Rough Trade East see HERE but Joe Steer (aka Broadcast 2000) sounds somewhere between Jamie T (impersonating Tim Hardin) and Arthur Russell’s lovechild joining Tunng (sans electronics) for a session “in his bedroom in Bickerton Road”. Bickerton Road is situated in an odd area of London that’s not really one thing or another but it’s ideal for Joe’s band as it mostly consists of himself as he not only sings but plays acoustic guitar, cello, double bass, ukulele, percussion and glockenspiel. It’s the cello and glockenspiel that proves to be the elements that add an uniqueness factor but to fill out where required, there are contributions by Tom Hobden (violin) and co-producer Eliot James (strings, piano, pipe organ, percussion) who has worked with Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party in the past. So whilst this appeared in all the trendy ‘Album of the Year’ lists I’m a little surprised I’ve not heard more of the tracks out and about. Possibly this is because it’s a proper collection of songs that set a mood and need to be heard as a complete set. Possibly it’s because there’s no obvious stand out track (albeit ‘All Is Said And Done’ is my current favourite whilst ‘Don’t Weigh Me Down’ has a chorus “la, la, la” line that could be advert material). Grönland Records was last on my radar with Sol Seppy’s The Bells Of 1 2 (with more Tunng-like comparisons) but that disappointingly didn’t seem to take off so good to see that they’ve found a winner with Joe’s Broadcast 2000 project. It’s not long until Tunng’s new album is released now but if you’re after something that’s near the same ball park, this one will keep you going in the meantime.
