Build An Ark - Dawn |

While Norman Howard (see Burn Baby Burn) owed his debt to Albert Ayler, Build An Ark’s mentor Carlos Nino looks to Horace Tapscott, who galvanised the jazz community in LA in the 60s. Nino then took that admiration and created a modern day version with an ever-expanding cast including veterans Dwight Trible, Nate Morgan, Adam Rudolph, Phil Ranelin, Derf Reklaw and the new associates from Ammoncontact, Hu Vibratonal and The Life Force Trio. Nearly 30 artists in total. Too many you might think? I would too but Nino knows what he’s looking to achieve and, not being one to jump to conclusions, I think this is going to be my album of the year. Seven of the ten tracks are original compositions. Two are by Pharoah Saunders and the Big Black’s ‘Love, Sweet Like Sugarcane’ provides a new classic. The ark continues to carry these musicians (and fans) into a more kindred spiritual place than Peace With Every, like a new Dawn. Just the best, Carlos and crew can do no wrong. Being the big jazz fan I am, really happy to see Build an Ark’s excellent ‘Dawn’ album appear. Again Carlos Nino getting deep with the spirits.
