Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Yet another butterfly of an album (we’ve already had two this year, Azymuth’s Butterfly and Finn Peters’ pural Butterflies) but this one is the debut from the German Turk DJ and producer Bülent Gürler (aka Butch) is adding to the subject. Great Stuff Recording’s boss Rainer Weichold is a big fan and you’ll remember that Butch had the Turkish “entry” on the compilation Great Summergames Stuff . In fact, it’s the tracks that he delves into the heritage of his roots that he takes this album far above the average, like ‘Soultan’, ‘Amelie’ and ‘Last Tango’. In fact, there’s a bit of a fuss but our man says, “These melodies are a big part of my families’ history. I don’t get all the tumult around these tracks. These aren’t the Satanic Verses on techno beats!” The album is called Papillon after being inspired by the film of the same name (the 1973 film based on the autobiography of Henri Charrière with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman). Originally he got into electronic music via his older brother’s enthusiasm and then via being a graf artist and then club dancer (sort of the evolving caterpillar stage), he’s fully emerged as the fully fledged artist. These 24 tracks on 2 CDs cover a period of three years’ work of moving dancefloors with a mixture of techno, house, minimal and collaborations. In fact, if you don’t know the work of Butch, be prepared for some surprises. Instant favourites are the bouncey ‘Wet’n’Tight’, ‘Ein-E’ and the retro ‘The Table’. There’s also the Gotan Project style ‘Amelie’ (with accordion tweaks) on a space house mix and ‘the music box in the rain forest’ of ‘Kaleidoscope Eyes’. It’s like each trakc tells a little story; ‘Bad Weed’ is perhaps more obvious than others but you’ll love the sub-Balkan violin on ‘Soultan’ with “soulful moans” of Julie Marghilano; you’ll see why the ablum is already nominated for two Beatport Music Awards in 2008 in the “Best Techno” and “Best Remix Techno” categories. Still not convinced? Check out ‘Something Called Acid’ or (currently on his myspace - see links below) ‘Mushroom Man’ and ‘Earth’; he’s also got tracks on the album ‘Wind’ and ‘Fire’ which made me laugh. The second CD includes material previously released on other forward thinking label like Trapez, AFU and Craft Music; love the time machine/wind tunnel of co-production with Amir. ‘Set It Off’ and the Popof remix of the single ‘1000 Lords’. I’ve no idea why he’s not coming to the UK to support the release of this album but if you’re after something a bit different, Butch is your man to set it off - great CD!
