Candie Payne - I Wish I Could Have Loved You More

For those of us who were expecting to see Ms. Candie Payne on the Mark Ronson tour, it’s disappointing to hear that the only gigs she’ll be doing will be the London dates. Oh well, we’ll have to be satisfied with the album for now

Candie Payne

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

And a mighty fine album it is! Unfortunately this one slipped to the bottom of the pile with the news that one of her brothers is the Zuton’s drummer and another was the Strand’s frontman. It was only when I saw her Six-Track mix in the Metro the other day I was reminded to check this out. And a good job I did as this album is like a reflection of Ronson’s Version but with original material.

Produced and co-written with Simon Dine (Noonday Underground), they’re clearly big fans of the sixties. With a big thank you to John Barry’s 007 style, the title track is a large cinemascope of a tune.

Staying with the big screen, ‘Why Should I Settle For You’ has a ‘Theme From The Godfather’ echo to it and ‘Take Me’ gets into acid jazz sitar vibes of Roy ‘Get Carter’ Budd while ‘In The Morning’ goes more black and white small screen like some TV detective series.

Inevitably there’s comparisons abounding with Springfield, Cilla, Morrissey (well, in the 3 minute pop-song meets Shaw type way) and then there’s the emergent darkness of a Scott Walker in ‘A Different You’.

You’ll not be the first to notice her name sounds like a made up porn star (which we can overlook) and the album cover is so dull compared to the music, you wonder what they were thinking about.

The album finishes on a bit of a whimper with ‘Seasons Change’ and ‘Turn Back Now’ but the rest of the 30 minutes is full of sugarsweet candy and pain. I’ll certainly be paying more attention when the second album comes out as this will be a hard one to follow.

Latest Tour Dates:
24 October — Camden Roundhouse (BBC Electric Proms 2007), London
25 October — Shepherds Bush Empire, London
8 December — Transmusicals Festival, Rennes
9 December — Alma de Cuba, Liverpool
