Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Early songs included a re-edit by Kissin Cousin of the Chi-Lites ‘Love Shock’, Aaron Jerome ft Yungun with ‘Late Night Mission’, Simbad & Abdul Shyllon ‘Supersonic Revelation’, then an untitled bass-laden heavyweight from Guynamite which got me excited! From the outset, the music flowed between styles, some artists favouring house or broken beats, others working from a hip hop perspective. With the Artist & Title of tracks getting typed up live on the CDR projection screen, the charm of the visible cursor and the delete key correcting mistakes amused myself and others. The music continued with the boldly titled and top quality ‘This is the Rhythm’ by Bergs then ‘Sunline’ by Aetherm, broken-beat balaeric business. ‘Freeka’ by FT resonated with sounds that would be apt on Goya Music releases. A remix of Indeep’s ‘Last night a DJ saved my Life’ by Daisuke Tanabe was a surprise treat and an excellent rework of a classic track, slower than the original with plenty of humming bass . Tony Nwachucku announced how “Patience is a virtue at CDR…” and for those who had submitted tracks it must be a nervy but exciting time awaiting their creation to resound out on the splendid Plastic People soundsystem Many, if not all of the producers & artists who had submitted tracks were dancing in the venue with the other music-lovers, Aaron Jerome, Simbad, Beatnick, Ben Hadwen (from Planet Rescue, with a full beard not his trademark sideburns!), Laila, Guynamite to name a few. The community atmosphere is perfectly framed by the intimacy of Plastic People’s low ceilings and cosy dancefloor. Ben Hadwen’s track ‘Defying Gravity’ blew me away, a blend of the old school acidy sounds from Detroit, Chicago or the UK, fused with the sounds of Now. ‘Defying Gravity’ was promptly followed with another of the evening’s many highlights, ‘Tell Me’ by Laila, wonderful pumping beats united with Laila’s soulfilled vocals. Tony Nwachucku announced how “Patience is a virtue at CDR…” and for those who had submitted tracks it must be a nervy but exciting time awaiting their creation to resound out on the splendid Plastic People soundsystem. The next highlight for me was a Spacek remix of ‘Morgan’ by Amy Winehouse, I haven’t heard her sound better. Another delight was ‘Reason’ by Joseph Jnr. A second member of Planet Rescue then had a track played, with Beatnick’s dubbed out remix of Azymouth, a beautiful bouncing song that got the applause it deserved, with it’s lovely splatters of drums and a heavy drop. Like so many tracks on the night it was a fine composition reflecting it’s varied influences and building through different movements. Another brilliant CDR night, which has quietly established itself as one of the best and eagerly-awaited music events in London. Free entry to a great venue, crowd and music, and along with Blacktronica and the Freesoul Sessions, CDR’s ethos is a blueprint for others. Links: |
