This project started out in North London with James Dring (who’s worked with Gorillaz) two years ago but only became cirKus when Karmil and Ford upped sticks and moved to Sweden. During this time they’ve toured around most of Europe and even visited Canada, Brazil, Morocco and an Island in the Indian Ocean!

In fact, the Hmmm mix of ‘Fools’ was inspired by their trip to Brazil; in particular, a trip from Sao Paulo on a Varig transfer bus that “made me feel sad…..”. With Ford’s past connections with Massive Attack, there’s no surprise that it’s a bit trip hoppy (but not in a dated way). I prefer the original version and once your into it, the “Fool around fools” hook starts to drag you in with the beautiful synth strings arrangements. From the start, with the ‘scratch’ “We git/frustration” you know these guys are putting a little bit more thought than most into this. Great lyrics but I’ve no idea who the vocalist is; “you lok/temptation”.

Just to show that the album, Laylower (to be released in July) is no one tracker, ‘Starved’ is in that downtempo soul groove with some intelligent scratchin’. There’s a cirKushake mix on their myspace site at the moment that takes the track on a broken space ship ride.

These guys know what they’re doing and the album supposed to feature Lolita Moon and Neneh Cherry (she of Don Cherry fame).
