V/A - Craig Richards: The Two Headed Monster |

|
Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. I’ll admit I’ve been continually astounded by how unfamiliar I am with the artists and the tracklistings selected by Craig Richards. “Where does he find this stuff?” in broken record mode I always ask my dealer. And he’s done it again here. ‘Jovian Zoology’ sets a high tempo from the start and with 18 tracks he doesn’t hang about. All full on techno gems that’d keep those Phonica guys and gals happy all day as it’s hard to spot the joins. Regular readers will know I’m a sucker for anything resembling the dark throb of the engine room and the best here are ‘Iky’ and ‘From A To B’ and ‘Knisterpop’. And that’s just the half of it as CD2 is a live set from Transparent Sound (Orson Bramley and Martin Brown from Bristol). Just press play for the finest ambient techno house. ‘Sucking Lemons’ is a dark prelude to the title track, The Two Headed Monster that was originally released on 12” on Orson. To steel the title of a later track, it is ‘Proper Techno’. Particularly the express train qualities of ‘Spot The Difference’ which are all coming back into fashion (I’m told); Rebirth? Over 7 years, Fabric fashions have come and gone but it’s remained one of the top clubs with the longest queues to get in to see the top DJs from all over the world, As a record of this, they started their own Fabric CD mix series. Some have been particularly good at capturing DJ sets. Off the top of my head, Carl Craig (FabricLive25) Diplo (Ninja Tune) had some good mixes in it, there was the Rob da Bank (Sunday Best/Bestival) eclectic selection and even Roots Manuva (Big Dada), Joe Ranson, The Herbalizer (Ninja Tune) and Ivan Smagghe. They are up to No. 30 at the moment (Rub-N-Tub available now) and they don’t look like stopping. Links: Thanks to ‘Brother’ Martin Hectic for his dealership arrangements with Rick ‘Ricky’ R.
