Daedelus - Fair Weather Friends

After the Throw A Fit release, it’s back to normal for Alfred Daedelus Darling with a sharp change of approach. Well, versatility is his middle name (Ed. No it’s not) and the 5 tracks on this EP move around from Dublab to his early Plug Research days of The Quiet Party. Concentrating on the more synth-pop end of his expertise and melody-rich elements of Exquisite Corpse.

The title track is very cheerleader electro pop based on the line, “when the weather gets warm, we get the same thing on our minds as you boys do.” Upbeat and happy, it’s a hybrid of Hello Kitty electronica, some 60s-guitar tinkering and the clapping of the disco classic ‘Contact’. It’s catchy, fun and richly deserves its recent placing in the top of One Week To Live’s chart. Check the amazing video:

And he sticks with the ladies on the next track ‘My Beau’, which brings on bumping electro with R&B vocals. It sounds almost like a Daedelus remix of a long lost Northern Soul track. And fans of Alfred Weisberg-Roberts know he’s a bit of huge rave fan. Something that he’s got into ‘Hermitage’ and its a strange one where acid gets rockin’ with some crazy ‘world’ vocals on reggalicious speed.

‘El Subidon’ satisfies my synth train impersonation addiction, at a faster pace than Waterloo to Beggars Banquet, that sweetly ends at Tokyo Station. And then, to say goodbye, he ends with ‘Bonjour’ which is possibly the best of the lot in an Exquisite Corpse type way.

Daedelus is on an extensive tour of the US up until Christmas so hopefully, this EP will last us to the New Year and ready for the next album.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Hermitage’ but ALL brilliant.
