Daedelus Feat. Michael Johnson - Make It So

Everyone loves a rakish Victorian dandy? If not yet, Daedelus will make it so with his latest single that’s just electronically lovely

“I love Daedelus” proclaimed Gilles Peterson on this week’s Worldwide show and he’s not the only one. I must admit, I’ve been in love with Alfred Weisberg-Roberts (aka Daedalus Darling) ever since FLY set me up with him back in 2005 at the time of the AmmonContact visit.

After the launch party last week at Corsica Studios, we eagerly await the release of the new album Love To Make Music To and even more live appearances (see below) plus this brilliant single to keep us going. The track features Michael Johnson (Holopaw) who some years ago got Daedelus to play bass clarinet on one of their tracks on the Sub Pop album Quit +/Or Fight. Couriously we’re not told what he plays but I’m putting my money on the banjo. Banjo! Has the electronic wizard gone country-folk-hillbilly. I wouldn’t put it past him (we know he can play the accordion from the Madlib star track of the same name; check out the Jackson Conti album, - Sujinho).

After Daedelus teamed up with TI$A (Taz Arnold from Sa-Ra) and a cast of LA thousand’s for the ‘Vote Obama’ video, here’s the ‘Make It So’ showreel fresh out of the box today!

On the remix front, here’s a new name to me, Samiyam. He’s a producer based in Michigan, member of the brilliantly named group FLYamSAM and past collaborator with current star at WARP, Flying Lotus. The guy turns in a strange techno bleep to a rumbling bass line that’s quite mesmorizing.

And here’s an old name that we haven’t heard much of lately, Moonstarr (aka Kevin Moon) is on the remix. Producer and DJ out of PRT (Public Transit Recordings) in Toronto, it’s been ages since his classic ‘Detroit’ found its way to Europe via our friends at Sonar Kollektiv. Since then there’s been mere trickles out of the man until the Moonstarr Remix compilation came out (respect to Play De Record for recommending that one). He’s certainly got a feel for the original but would you say this is house? Would you? The instrumental version is funkier go-go electro but not only that, you might be surprised that Spank Rock’s XXXchange gets the crunk out of his house-funk.

‘Make It So’ is as equally brilliant as the previous singles ‘Hrs:Mins;Secs’ and ‘Fair Weather Friends’ and as someone more perspective than me has said, “Daedelus is a starship trooper from the past”; let him press your buttons!
