Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip Feat. Pos Plug Won - Thou Shalt Always Kill (De La Edit) |

I was most surprised Mr. da Bank didn’t ‘answer’ any of Gilles ‘crumpets come but once a year’ Peterson’s choices on their Radio 1 Christmas Day head-to-head battle with any of the new versions of ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ especially as there’s such a great mix of housey, electro, d’n’b as well as hip-hop poetry. Scroobius Pip’s listing street commandants always raises a smile whilst you move your body to the electro beats. And in amongst the humour, there’s the pathos; “just ‘cos you write a blog does not make you a journalist”, and the classic “thou shall not put recording artists on pedestals [insert band], just a band”. And lets have a go at youth genres, “oh forget it, I’m ain’t getting into all that again.” For us music obsessive’s, the “just a band” really hurts but it’s so true and the list is now updated with a couple of 2008’s big things. De La Soul might be just a band but so if you want someone to join in the fun, call Plug Won (aka Kelvin Mercer of the De La Soul) who gets into the spirit of things. “Thou shall not type LOL whilst not laughing out loud…Thou’ shall not rush De La Soul into making a next album” (tongue firmly in cheek there) and adds some insights on “people of color” policital correctness speak and bigs up Tina Turner’s butt compared to Beyonce’s (interesting!) How’d it go, “It’s a Saturday, Saturday, Saturdayayah.” Rob da Bank’s Radio 1 show is keen on Rex The Dog and And being the eclectic da Bank, the other remixes are just as good and varied. The Sunday Best mix, presumably by Rob himself, is more laid back to the Blue Room of old like a post Sunday lunch with the Yellow Magic Orchestra on the beach with a steel drum band; ridiculously cosmic. On a different style, enfant terribles Losers get go-go synthy with guitars and the d’n’b remix team of Friction & K-Tee give us a hard remix that stays on track (for similar rock/electro d’n’b try remix package of The Qemists’ Dem Na Like Me featuring Wiley that’s coming out early February). No doubt 2009 will see Mr. da Bank as busy as ever with his Radio 1 show, Sunday Best Recordings, Greco-Roman wrestling at Bloc and with the sunscreen at crazy Bestival events, but just to recap; Rob da Bank, just a DJ, Sunday Best Recordings, just a record label, ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ just a single, thou shall not put recording artists on pedestals - Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip Feat. Pos Plug Won, just a band. Reviewed: Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip Feat. Pos Plug Won - Thou Shalt Always Kill (De La Edit) (Sunday Best Recordings) Cat.
