Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Fans of the debut album of a couple of years ago Angles or their classic ”Thou Shalt Always Kill’ might be surprised by the more dance-oriented production; whether that be a house-d’n’b of the opener ‘Sick Tonight’ and or the ambient-hop of ‘Five Minutes’ and ‘Inert Explosions’ or indie-electro-dubstep of ‘The Beat’. Wow! The one thing that fans (or haters for that matter) can’t deny is that the spoken word poet lyrics/rap of Scroobius Pip’s is still totally unique as the voice of the nation - particularly the single ‘Get Better’ and ‘Great Britain’ (sort of electro-d’n’b this one). Florence (of Florence & The Machine) gets a cameo spot on ‘Cauliflower’ but that’s my least favourite of the set whilst the C&W-esque ‘Cowboi’ is really urban grime at its scariest - if you ever witnessed the Rhoda Dakar perform ‘The Boiler’ live, that’s really intense (for more up-to-date past 2-Toner, see the Spatial AKA HERE). What with the World Cup coming up, the duality of a our feelings about England (see our as developed here as ‘Great Britain’) or the problems of innocent teen love vs. real life teenager pregnancy/motherhood (‘Get Better’) Pip is the man to put his/our feelings into verse (whilst Dan provides the beats so we can dance to our misery) and one for the elections that are coming up in May, ‘Stake A Claim’. Yet another track for train spotters (that’s the third in a row) but if you can’t relate to ‘Last Train Home’ I’d be most surprised as Pip tries not to be a miserable old git (watch out for the ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ moment) and as a writer of reviews, is ‘Snob’ (music) aimed at us? Get that warped disco d’n’b beat; still love De La Soul and ATCQ. I swear Dan Le Sac Vs. Strobilus Pip are just getting better all the time. Really recommend that you get yourself to (at least) one of them of the forthcoming gigs on the tour supporting the album’s release (starting tonight); get you pen shaped swords at the ready!
