David Gilmour Girls - 'Crimson As Murder'

David Gilmour Girls have been high on the Relish rave, electro, disco ratings but ‘Crimson As Murder’ is their best yet.

DavidGilmourGirlsCAM.JPG

David Gilmour Girls was originally a side project of Oil members Jasper Uhl and Robin Van Der Kaa but when Oil dissolved in 2004, this producing and remix team started to get serious.

With tracks featured on the Relish Compilation EP and ‘Crimson As Murder’ turning up on the Headman double CD Compilation, it’s good to hear this track on vinyl finally.

Lets forget the P.Floyd references as the original mix is right on the current disco rave up trend but it’s the un-punk, post punk ESG style mix by London’s Punks Jump Up that combines the dub out guitar with a dance floor boogie bass. It’s like Factory Records have finally got all the elements of disco sorted to make a real disco-punk alternative to reggae. It might have taken 30 years but it was worth the wait. Let’s hope there’s no ‘Do You Think I’m Sexy’ joker to spoil the party.

Currently residents in Berlin (where else?), Paul Mogg and Xaver Naudasher have worked out a downtempo multi-layer minimal version in comparison. It keeps the dubby echo vibe with the electronica. It makes the original version sound so much richer; mainstream if you like.

That said, both remixes are great in their own different ways making this an excellent 12”. The debut album will be coming out this year and expect to see David Gilmour Girls on the remix credits this summer.

The “Eardrums shall fail” blog said:

“Remixing is raised to art status when you give new life to music, any type of music. To see potential in a boring cut, to push the envelope all the way to different galaxies, to let your mind wander where the originary intention left off, all this presumes passion and marquees lighting up over your head as opposed to a mere lightbulb. A writer, most of the cases, is a passionate reader and afterwards a remixer of words. Tago-Mago does that with music. I may not like each and every track but that would be a strange and new feeling anyway. Rarely have I heard a reinvention of music I was, or thought I was, familiar with, in such unexpected ways. His major influence is Can, and the mixes are inspired by a variety of hip hop and electronica artists.”
