Diesler - The Rhythm Station

In the highly competitive world of funky soul and breaks, the adventurous Diesler stood out at Tru Thoughts. That said, the move to Freestyle Records seems to have given even his creativity a boost on this new album

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

There are comparisons to be made here with DJ Vadim’s return to form with the recent move to BBE, Freestyle seems a natural home for this third album. Not quite as diverse as The Soundcatcher Extras but Diesler (aka Jonathan Radford) is another one who believes in the ‘variety is the spice’ of life doctrine.

The ladies are in abundance and the monster trombone on ‘Passion’ is perfect with Miss Afrika’s Latin vocals. Sounds an odd mix to start with but it’s a tune. Equally, the mambo-tip of ‘Lovetouch’ with the vocals from Kinny (of Kinny & Horne) is another track driven by the horns.

We loved the Parnorml’s ‘Jazz Is The Fundamentals EP’, ‘Some Assembly Required’ is not up to Leeds’ Testament who makes ‘Restless’ even if he does sound very much like TY.

Possibly the best title of the year, the jazzy ‘Dopplegangland’ but the instrumental that dropped loudest at Big Chill this year is the broken-Latin-bugz of the last track, ‘When She Was Bad’.

There’s a couple of oddballs, like part downtempo — part Latin bongo break ‘The I In Team’ (another great title) but that’s as it should be as you try out new ideas.

But then you can’t go wrong with Laura Vane who has a couple of tracks on here, the opener, ‘Welcome To Hellmorth’ (erm.. is that a town near Burnley?) and ‘Revelations’ (which sounds like a re-interpretation of ‘On Broadway’ at times, which isn’t a bad thing)

If you’re into the zones of Mr. Scruff, DJ Vadim, PTH Projects, BiggaBush (and who isn’t), this is a album for you.

Freestyle are real busy at the moment as this release closely follows Lack Of Afro’s Press On album while Diesler’s currently working on the ‘Diesler Live Experience’ which is not a burlesque show but a 9-piece touring band. Now that will be an experience!

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Passion’, ‘Restless’, ‘Dopplegangland’, ‘Welcome To Hellworth’, ‘Revelations’
