Gilles Peterson (Radio 1) and Nick Luscombe (XFM) have both featured the tracks ‘Lullaby For Gastric Ulcer’ (which is stretched and warped as a medical condition should be) and ‘Outernational Duet’ (with Gaby Hernandez of Ammoncontact, Life Force Trio, etc). This is definitely one for fans of Dublab and Plug Research and arguably the most “commercial” of the tracks with a funky guitar lick and spacey keys backing Hernandez’s silky vocals. Another track to listen of for is the broken proto jazz of ‘Hungeryears & Advanced Communication’ that’s over six minutes of breaks contortion (this one is definitely going on the Hectic Safehouse Hunting mixtape). In a similar mixed-up jazz inspired d’n’b vein, is the hauntingly dark and light of the cinematic ‘Now Walk’. Buddy Leezle raps on the Daedelus influenced string-synth-beat, ‘Sophisticated Youthpower’ and you’ll find on some of the other tracks the Darling influences of ambient acoustic guitar and gentle synths. ‘The Way Blood Travels’ is another strangely hypnotic one based on a ‘Clapping Song’ theme and ‘Occasionally Touching Earth’ is a booming one-two beat in the computer game room of sound efx. The album ends on a high of operatic cut and paste beats for ‘Count Your Sunrises’. To be honest, I don’t think I’ll ever come to grips with his debut album, Runbox Weathers but I’m going to dig it out again. Time for Dimlite to come out of the shadows. Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Outernational Duet’, ‘Hungeryears & Advanced Communication’, ‘The Way Blood Travels’, ‘Occasionally Touching Earth’, ‘Count Your Sunrises’.
