DJ Vadim - The Soundcatcher Extras |
|||||||
|
This CD is so extra, it might even eclipse the original The Soundcathcer as it features some new tracks and some remixes. With the same idea as before, mixing up a bit of funk, dancehall, dub, reggae, house, soul and jazz with hip hop, the 16 tracks are never dull, from the opener, ‘Raise Your Glass’, to the soul of ‘I Can Never’ with a crazy synth, the rap in French by Bunzen on ‘Quand Vient La Nuit’ (joined by Bravo and Blu Rum of his previous project, One Self) and some old skool on ‘Countdown’ featuring Rashan Ahmad. And that’s just the first four tracks! ‘Saskatoon’ might not sound that metropolitan, but pair Youngblood Brass Band with some broken abstract dubby synth and it’s far out man! There’s a couple of remixes of b-boy monster ‘Got To Rock’. Stones Throw’s Griffi keeps it dark and electro and Aaron ‘Mr. Soulblender’ Jerome (fresh from his remixes for Fania and Nicole Willis!). Aaron can do no wrong as you know and his debut album is coming out on BBE early next year we’re told. Kankanevil is another hot remixer (see Natural Self’s Love Theme) and our old mate J Star drops a fat one the size of a FFD on ‘Watch That Sound’ (with Finn Peters on sax). Keeping on the JA tip, ‘Boom Sumting’ (featuring Demolition Man) was released 12” earlier in the year but the mix up is the Jr Eakee mix of ‘Kill, Kill, Kill’. No pun intended, but three mixes of ‘Kill, Kill, Kill’ might have been overkill. the album ends on a high with the funky house of a Deface Groove remix that’s really deep. Much like the Nicole Willis Keep Reachin’ Up Remixed, this is at least as good as the original album. I’d even go as far to say, Extras is better than original. Ninja Tunes have let this one slip and Peterson should get him back on the show with this one. Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Saskatoon’, Got To Rock’ (both versions), ‘Kill, Kill, Kill’ (Deface Groove, Jr Eakee Remix), ‘Watch That Sound’ (J Star Fat Drop mix), ‘SD1’, ‘Raise Your Glass’, ‘Quand Vient La Nuit’, ‘Like The Wind’ (Kidkanevil mix) Reviewed: DJ Vadim — The Soundcatcher Extras (BBE) Cat.
