Domu - Return of the Rogue

Hopefully, you’ll have heard the Domu interview on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Show recently. Even if you haven’t come across his own releases, chances are you come across a remix or two from Dominic Stanton aka Domu, Sonar Circle, Rima, Bakura, Umod or one of his many other projects

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Gilles chatted to him about his early influences, when he was hanging out with 4-Hero and Bugz In The Attic 10 years ago. You can hear these influences in most of what he does, such as his remix of Park Street’s ‘Sunday Joint’ or even the housey Discotech EP of last year.

So it’s no surprise to us Domu followers that the album is of the same quality. However, this ‘Rogue’ hasn’t really been away so perhaps the album could have been named after the title track, ‘Arrival’. Not that there’s any comparison with the ABBA album of the same name, it seems he’s now ‘arrived’ with a more grown-up Domu sound, especially on the downtempo tracks ‘So Precious’ and ‘It’s You’.

‘Arrival’ itself is pure West London broken number with dreamy ‘Ahh, Ahh’ vocals by Rasiyah with the added attraction of Danny Huckridge on bass. And I do, ‘Like This?’ which is on the jazzy side of broken beat on a Bugz tip.

In fact, all the tracks with vocals by Nicola Kramer come out well, like the Gilles “supported” ‘Unfazed’ and the even better afro-beat flava ‘Let Me Be’.

‘Stay Away’ gets the heart beat monitor ‘bing-bing’ touch but ‘Last Encounter’ (funky-broken with Headhunter respect), ‘Ghetto Samba’ and ‘Signs’ (+ Spacey EFX) are better.

I’ll always love Domu for the Best Seven ‘Souljah’ 7” with Volcov but that was just a bit of fun compared to this. If I have got one slight moan, all but a couple of the tracks are about the same length where some could have been pruned and others extended. Picky I know but I don’t want to sound like a total sycophant. So I’ll let someone else do that. The Best Kept Secret crew say, he’s a, “brilliant, lovely bloke, boundlessly talented, an amazing DJ, an incredible producer and remixer.”

Anyone that did listen to the Gilles interview and (more importantly) his music, you can feel it’s all true, even coming from Bedford hasn’t slowed him down. This album comes via Italian Archive and in addition to label bossman Enrico Crivellaro (aka Volcov) being a fan, check below from more big-ups.

When he’s not in the studio or Djing around the world, you’ll find him at some of his favourite UK clubs such as Eyes Down and Plastic People (see links below). Wah Wah 45’s Dom Servini said the other day, “Domu’s set was 30 minutes of killer dance floor boogie… top quality as always” (U Need This?).

And the Domu ‘live’ showcase to come! Nout broke here mate.
