Don Cash - 'Disco Wreck' EP

Was there ever a better line in a song than: “Your Iron Maiden sounds like Judas Priest”?

Don Cash

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Probably, but if you know your East End Heavy Metal giants, you’ll get the irony as ‘Disco Wreck’ is as far from leather studded rock ‘n’ roll as you can get — by the way, did I ever tell you that you’re humble correspondent used to regularly rub shoulders at the bar with the original Maiden vocalist, Paul Di’Anno?

Back to the latest whiz to be signed to Relish, Don Cash had a couple of tracks on Headman’s recent Relish Compilation. ‘Baby’s Rad’ owed much to 80’s disco and ‘Disco Wreck’ takes the debt closer to LCD Soundsystem, A Certain Ratio, ESG or even Magazine.

‘Disco Wreck’ is his first solo release on Relish and follows tracks on his own Toronto based Stereo Eagle label and another Toronto label that specialises in disco and dub, Truffle Music.

The original ‘Disco Wreck’ is an electro punk rocker that Headman takes bouncing down the street hand in hand to the disco for grown ups with pained warping synths.

‘Don’t Crash’ was included on the Compilation EP and fellow Canadian, Dirty 30 get a remix. Cash and 30 are old mates from Truffle Music days and it’s a big electro-[don’t]-clash type way.

The inclusion of the downtempo electro funk ‘Hey There’ is the surprise of the package; like some Prince meets Alvin Stardust nightmare, it crawls over your skin like dermatitis.

So like his compatriot Mocky, Cash provides us with more addictive modern day but don’t forget to put your glove on if you’re going to handle ‘Hey There’.

Hectic Mix nominations: All of them including ‘Hey There’
