Dr. Rubberfunk - 'Taking Over' (Ashley Beedle Remix)

On remix duties, this is the Mr. Beedle, formerly of Afro Art Records, Black Science Orchestra, The Ballistic Brothers, The Uschi Classen Band and currently globe trotting DJ and member of X-Press 2.

Dr. Rubberfunk - Taking Over

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

We last heard of him on Fly as The London Heavy Disco Revue and on the remix, Amadou & Mariam’s ‘Coulibaly’.

In terms of remix credibility, there are not many bigger than Mr. Beedle (apparently Mick Jagger was so pleased with the Aashleybeedlesheavydiscovocalreedit remix of ‘Rain Fall Down’ that he phoned Ashley to thank him personally!) Must admit I preferred the instrumental version, the Bashleybeedlesheavydiscodubreedit without Mick’s distinctive vocal but it’s some measure of Ashley’s stature on the decks.

So what a coup for Dr. Rubberfunk to get him on the remix (no hint of this in Hectic’s interview with him last October) and I’m own up to not spotting the potential and I put that down to the album My Life At 33 containing so many great tracks such as ‘Watch The Tables Turn’/‘Live Wired’ ).

Very much in the Beedle Afro Art period. The remix flirts with some ‘Ring My Bell’ EFX and the sax sounds even more ‘authentic’ than on the original mix. Even if Ms. Amofah’s performance is very good, I’m prone to favour the instrumental version. Blimey, all those drums and strings and horns and wah wahness. It lasts a full eight glorious minutes and it’s all great.

Don’t forget the original version either; the modern room at the Blackpool Mecca?

Not only that, hot news that there’s a Yam Who? remix of ‘Theme For A Latter Day Lothario’ to look forward to (remember their funky remix of ‘Rise’?), there’s a new Dr. Rubberfunk podcast available to download and he’s done an exclusive for the Rock Steady Crew for the next Red Bull beat battle in early April (see links below).
