Dr. Rubberfunk - Watch The Tables Turn

The cover to this 12” is so good you can’t help worrying that ‘Don’t judge a…’ applies. Worry not, the funk is here even if it is a little bit rubbery

Dr. Rubberfunk - Watch The Tables Turn

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

We’ve come across this good Dr. before on his remix of Skapel’s ‘Break Out’, The Fort Knox Five’s ‘The Brazilian Hipster’ (particular Hectic favourite) and on Baker Brother’s recent funker with Vanessa Freeman. ‘Walk Into My World’.

‘Watch The Tables Turn’ is produced, performed and arranged by Dr. Rubberfunk and it comes in a couple of versions. The main track is the 12” mix and features the London based MC/vocalist Sara J. She’s done a bit of a Missy Elliot rap and the vocals are strong. With added beatboxing from Shredded Pete and scratches from Buddy Peace we’ve got a funky break hip hop for the dancefloor. The b-side has a Beat-A-Pella Mix for those mixing types and the drums sound really good ‘live’ in their raw state.

The other track, called ‘Live Wired’, is a funky instrumental with guitarist Jim Oliver on slide. The PR notes suggest the sound is like “the Allman Brothers produced by Pete Rock”. Have you ever heard anything so daft? So why does it work in a funky-hoe-down way? I can’t tell you and perhaps it should be kept in the back woods but try it a few times; it strangely grows on you. Check it out below as it’s the first track on the Radio 6 mix on the funkydown home page.

So not quite the ‘Bossa For The Devil’ or ‘The Owner’ from Dr. Rubberfunk of a few years ago but definitely some different dancefloor action to come on the forthcoming on the new album if this is 12” is anything to go by.
