Dr. Syntax - 'Sub-Cultures'

Here’s a guy with some observations on the difficult problem of finding a sub-culture to fit your individual personality.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Dr. Syntax’s emcees with the Imagineers and the Menagerie but is probably best known for working with Foreign Beggars where the ‘Sub-Cultures’ rap is his party piece at their live shows.

Times have moved on since the 60s where the choice was simply Mod vs. Rocker. It’s so hard for today’s youth to know what trend they should follow. The Dr. guides us through his experiences of pub bores, petty criminals, smokin’ hippies, trendies, garage ravers, footie hooligans, rich Indie kids, stick insects, S&M lovers and even Internet UK hip hop heads, “where have all the normal people gone?” His certificate from the University of Street Social Sciences is no doubt hanging in on the wall of his WC as the prognosis is, “Don’t let the limits of your past time define you.” Foreign Beggars’ Dag Nabbit does a fine job on the production of ‘Sub-Cultures’.

This track isn’t a one off, as Dr. Syntax knows what he doesn’t like. Clearly he sees the p*ss in everything/everybody and can take it to ridiculous lengths. He keeps up the ‘observations’ on the other two tracks that both show his passion for rhythms as he tells us he’s the best. ‘Animal Hides’ and ‘Pack Mentality’ are both produced by another talent to watch out for, Ido.

Is it me or does ‘Pack Mentality’ sound like a cross between The Sensational Alex Harvey Band’s ‘Delilah’ and the theme to Randal & Hopkirk (Deceased)? Anyway, Syntax links up on this one with Orifice Vulgatron (Foreign Beggars), Koaste, DJ Manipulate and scratchin’ from Manipulate and the ‘pack mentality…” is sort of a part 2 to ‘Sub-Cultures’.

Dr. Syntax’s rapping and comedic skills will get himself a niche in UK hip hop that will be enhanced on the launch of the 12” and the album Self Taught planned for October.

Live Date: RA the Rugged Man, Dr Syntax 12” Launch, Manage Album Launch, DJ Disorda, Newborn at Prince Albert Pub, 48 Trafalgar Street, Brighton, BN1 4ED, Cost: £5.00 “This is gonna be big!”
