Drumattic Twins - Hammer & Tongs

It’s about time the Drumattic Twins realeased a follow up to their Drumattical album and Hammer & Tongs is it; unsurprisingly, they go at it Hammer & Tongs from the start!

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Kicking off with single ‘Don’t Be So Drumattic’, the album also includes the a-sided flip of ‘Sound Of The Drum’ (see review HERE), Hammer & Tongs is a full on “melange of breakbeats, soaring strings, electro roots, sprinklings of soul and rude basslines” as they say.

Once again, the duo of Nick Slater and Kevin Lancaster (aka Drumattic Twins) break up their kinda progressive house to bring us their anvil bangin’ dancefloor beats that is typified by their classic track from 2007, ‘Hyperspeed’. And staying in space, ‘Broken Planet’ is in no need of repair (nice Eastern vibe to this one) and ‘Under The Lights’ is still spinning the room with luscious strings from space (as featured on 10 Years Of Finger Lickin’).

‘Back To The Old School’ gets the ital-piano out for some hands in the air jollity and staying back in time, ‘Twister’ is another dig into their back catalogue but it’s as big a whirlwind as it was in 2005 and then ‘Drum Thunder’ shows that they can still land big baseline tunes.

But it’s not all in your face as ‘Deep Throat’ is retro-disco with big stings, ‘Pick Me Up Baby’ touches on the nu-Balearic revival and ‘Soul Flower’ is a jazzy piano beat bouncer instrumental.

And to show off their two extremes of this ‘twin’ partnership ‘Fly Young Canaboids’ draws on the sirens to make sure you take cover whilst the closing track is the gentle ‘Antique Vinyl’ that’s like David Dickinson at a car boot sale; erm, actually, this is arguably the best track on the album with Claire Gillgrass featuring on heavenly vocals.

That said, you can’t take the drum out of the DT’s and this album will be bangin’ on the CD player for quite some time.
