Dub Colossus - Return To Addis EP

With a gig lined for Dingwalls on Wednesday, it’s time to return to Addis with the astonishing sound of Dub Colossus.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Dub Colossus’ album A Town Called Addis was a highlight of last year so it was no real surprise that Charlie Gillet included their ‘Tazeb Kush’ track on his Sound of the World Presents: Otro Mundo compilation that’s just come out.

You’ll recall that British producer Nick Page (aka Dubulah) went to Addis Ababa and worked some fantastic local musicians; Sintayehu ‘Mimi’ Zenebe (vocals), Tsedenia Gebremarkos Woldesilassie (vocals), Teremage Woretaw (vocals, messenqo), Feleke Hailu Woldemariam (saxophones), Samuel Yirga Mitiku (electric piano, organ) and together they mixed traditional Azmari styles, 60s Ethiopian pop, Ethiojazz and 70’s Jamaican roots reggae dub to produce a classic nu-world sound.

For the gig at Dingwalls, Nick will be joined by speical guests Dr. Das on bass (ex-Asian Dub Foundation), Nick Van Gelder on drums (ex-Jamiroquar) and The Horns of Negus (Dr. John) with full DJ support from Jamie Renton (Chilli Fried) Duke Etienne. And you can also catch them at WOMAD Charlton Park and Solfest (see links below and WOMAD preview HERE).

But if you can’t make it, here’s a new 4-track EP that’s got two remixes and a two previously unreleased tracks. First up on the remix is Sidestepper who is known for he own take on ‘global dance’ and he gets those mountain drums and rolling basslines into a transcendental state with Dick Dale on guitar and Yusek Lateef on flute (not literally of course). But that doesn’t prepare you for the Cesar Diaz Remix of ‘Sima Edy’ that’s so drenched in dub smoke it’s as if Lee Perry was producing Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics.

Taking of Mr. Perry, ‘Negus Dub’ is a stuning workout featuring the horny offspring of the Sons Of Negus, the mighty Horns of Negus and ‘Habasha Dub’ that’s very Mulatu inspired.

Without doubt, the best EP of the summer and if you act quick, there might be one of the every limited edition 7” picture discs left; 7” picture discs in the age of itunes!
